Book collection  איסוף ספרים   ביכער-זאמלונג

During its existence YUNG YiDiSH has collected and saved from destruction and oblivion over 40,000 books from private donors, from estates, from institutions and libraries that closed down and from books found on the streets, throughout Israel. The shelves of YUNG YiDiSH Jerusalem are home to some 6,000 books, catalogued and neatly organized, according to theme and author.

In Tel Aviv, we have managed to process some other 14,000 books through volunteering help, but much work still lies ahead. Some 2,500 books have been distributed to students, researchers and other interested individuals. More than 400 rare books were given to four libraries in order to complete their holdings. Over 20,000 books are still waiting in boxes for shelves we have yet to set up. YUNG YiDiSH is still looking for the resources to establish an extensive, user-friendly catalogue of its holdings, but we do everything we can to make our books available and accessible to the public already.

Apart from supplying books to avid young and old readers, researchers and students, YUNG YiDiSH has used them for Yiddish book exhibits at public spaces and institutions such as Alma College, Jerusalem Cinematheque, The Yiddish Writer's Union in Israel, Tel Aviv University, Vilna University and of course at our YUNG YiDiSH locations.

YUNG YiDiSH wishes to thank all book donors and  all volunteers: shelvers, shleppers, builders, collectors, sorters, who during the years have participated in developing and sustaining the book project by their invaluable contribution and work.  Special mention to Rachel Corkhidi for packing, unpacking, sorting, ordering, shelving, repacking and unpacking and reshelving, repairing, treating and ordering of tens of thousands of books, each one by one, since 1996.  Rachel has been essential for setting up the library in YY Jerusalem, Beys Leivick, Vilna and YY Tel Aviv.
Meir Tshetshik: Yiddish book maven, volunteering librarian, collector for YUNG YiDiSH since 1991. Tshetshik, who is also composer and hazn, has been a continuous and generous help in cataloging, locating and saving books, and obviously as performing hazn and story teller.
Pinkhas Maurer: First library assistant, shelved and created a handwritten cardsystem of 2,500 books in the years 1992-1996. (Pinkhas is now at the National Library.)
