Book Collecting and Book Cataloging: We have been collecting for more than 15 years. More than Yiddish books: sheet music, records, magazines, letters, games and Yiddish artifacts. During its existence YUNG YiDiSH has collected and saved from destruction and oblivion over 40,000 books from private donors, from estates, from institutions and libraries that closed down and from books found on the streets, throughout Israel. The shelves of YUNG YiDiSH Jerusalem are home to some 6,000 books catalogued and neatly organized according to theme and author. In Tel Aviv we have managed to process over 14000 books thanks to volunteer help but much work still lies ahead. Some 2,500 books have been distributed to students, researchers and other interested individuals. YUNG YiDiSH provided more than 400 rare books to different libraries in order to complete their holdings. Over 20,000 books are still waiting in boxes for shelves we have yet to set up.

library1From Library to Living Museum: Everyone is invited to read and consult our books at our library, and we are looking forward to the day when we will be able to keep regular opening hours (we would prefer 24 hours a day). Members can also borrow books, and in consideration of those who have trouble moving or are simply the homey type, we also do lending services by mail. We are very much looking forward to expanding and completing our Yiddish Library, to render it into a true Cosmopolitan Yiddish Library, a representative multi-lingual Library of Yiddish works, which will also contain all the Yiddish works  that appeared or will appear in  other languages, together with works newspaperspertaining to different aspects of Yiddish. In addition, we plan to have subscriptions to Yiddish periodicals  from all over the world, a music and film collection – and YUNG YiDiSH will be an updated and continuously growing resource and information center of Yiddish creativity and culture throughout the ages.

YUNG YiDiSH welcomes different cultures and media and invites innovation and dialogue. Since 1999, YUNG YiDiSH tries to keep up a regular events calendar with weekly or bi-weekly events.
mendy-200406-034The pleasure, knowledge and enjoyment the public derived from the YUNG YiDiSH events is just one side of the coin. YUNG YiDiSH has for years managed to provide an accessible stage for artists, and has attracted and encouraged new creative talents who have had and are having a positive impact on Yiddish contemporary creativity and growth. Although there is now a Yiddish theater company in Israel with institutional support, independent performers and small-scale productions remain in lack of productive support.

Educational programs and classes: Books and knowledge go together. YUNG YiDiSH has given the stage to a wide phil-cd-2002-303array of lecturers, researchers and authors. Linguists, psychoanalysts, journalists, writers, art critics and scholars have shared tveynaplactorheir insights, in Yiddish, front of our audiences. Yiddish classes, series on Yiddish folksongs, lectures on Yiddish artists (Soutine, Chagall), in-depth readings of Yiddish writers and poets, studies of Zene u'Rene, The badkhn in History, Yiddish through Time and Space, Yiddish writers in Israel, the folksong…are only a few of the themes tackled at YUNG YiDiSH. A series on the Development of the Yiddish Language and Literature is in preparation for 2009.

dsc00340Free Yiddish Concerts for the Underprivileged Holocaust Survivors: with the support of the Norway Jewish Foundation, headed by Elie Wiesel, YUNG YiDiSH has managed to form a group of artists who go out to communicate and perform in Yiddish in clubs and old age homes. Those events are not simple concerts, but are meetings designed to create interaction, communication and continuity, involving music, song, poetry, literature and oral history. The response has been very positive and it is a rewarding experience to all involved.

Klezmer Classes: YUNG YiDiSH has allocated in its Jerusalem branch work- and rehearsal space for the Jerusalem Klezmer Association. Individuals who are interested in learning the art of klezmer music are invited to join classes, phil-cd-2002-042music sessions and workshops. In the tradition of old, music is taught hands-on, ears-on. Bring your instrument, even if you don't read sheet music.

26060009smallSummer Programs: YUNG YiDiSH has been involved over the years in major Yiddish summer course projects, in Vilna (Vilnius), Lithuania (1998-2004), in Jerusalem (2005) and recently we were partners in launching the new summer program at Tel Aviv University.

Publishing: YUNG YiDiSH is a proud partner in the publication of the Yerushalaymer Almanakh and is its distributor in Israel.
