Experience the beauty, humor, passion, and soul of Yiddish music in a unique evening with world-renowned Yiddish pianist and singer Zalmen Mlotek and the ensemble NIHZ.
Zalmen Mlotek, artistic director of the legendary National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene in New York, is one of the leading figures in the preservation and celebration of Yiddish culture and music. As the son of Yosl and Chana Mlotek, whose lifelong dedication to collecting, documenting, and preserving Yiddish songs has been invaluable, Zalmen continues a rich musical tradition that connects generations.
Joining him is NIHZ, the internationally acclaimed ensemble of Bobby Rootveld (guitar & vocals) and Sanna van Elst (flutes & vocals), together with Levi Rootveld (vocals, percussion & flutes) and Orna Baina (percussion). Known for their research into Jewish music, Holocaust-era repertoire, and their own Yiddish compositions, NIHZ brings a unique combination of authenticity, energy, and emotion to the stage.
Together, Zalmen Mlotek and NIHZ present a captivating programme celebrating the endless richness of Yiddish song. The evening will feature beloved works by legendary Yiddish poets and composers such as Mordechai Gebirtig and Itzik Manger, unforgettable songs from the golden age of Yiddish theatre, traditional melodies from the shtetl, and new Yiddish repertoire that keeps this living musical language alive.
From joyful klezmer rhythms to deeply moving ballads, from humor and nostalgia to longing and hope, the programme paints a vivid portrait of Jewish life and the many emotions carried within the Yiddish neshome — the Jewish soul.
An evening of music, memories, and stories that will transport the audience to another world while reminding us that Yiddish culture is not only a heritage of the past, but a vibrant voice that continues to sing today.
